History of Assos

Welcome to one of important cities of history which is Assos. Assos was founded by Methymnians which came from Lesbos island in the 7th century. After collapse of Lydian Kingdom, Persians took control of the city but in 365 BC, Eubolos who was a banker, campaigned Persians and won the freedom.After his term, his slave who was Hermias continued development of the city. Hermias was a student of Plato's Academy. Therefore, Hermias founded an academy at Assos and he made an agreement with Aristotle and Xenocrates to give lectures for the public.  When the academy was founded in Assos, West of the Anatolia met with philosophy. To understand importance of the philosophy, an event is arranged by some academicians nowadays in memoriam of Aristotle.  Aristotle lived the Assos three years and in this term he married with Hermias' niece. After leaving Aristotle from the city 347 BC, the city was captured by Persians again. Alexander the Great saved the city after Granikos Wars in 334 BC. After 200 years, the city was controlled by Roman Empire until the 14th century AD. Assos was used for trade activites under the Roman Empire term. It had a port to realize the trade with other cities. It conserved this opportunity until the 18th century. Even Turks took advantage of the port when they captured the city in 14th century.

Nowadays, city has some ruins which are Athena temple, columns, towers and rocks. Archeological remains are exhibited some museums which are located at Paris, Boston, İstanbul and Çanakkale. The city surrounded by beautiful natural environment. Mountains, trees and birds show excellent harmony with sea in the city. If you haven't been in there, take a beverage, listen birds, think about phlosophy and feel relax.
